What was your first ever videogame?
🕹️ PAC-MAN, FROGGER & THE ATARI DAYS… WHEN I WAS A PROFESSIONAL VIDEO GAME ATHLETE! 😂👾🐸
What was my first-ever video game?
Well, heavens to Betsy Ross! Somebody just opened up a time machine and sent me straight back to the fabulous 1980s! 😂
Before there were PlayStations, Xboxes, Nintendo Switches, virtual reality headsets, and people wearing headphones screaming at complete strangers halfway across the world, there was the one, the only, the LEGENDARY…
ATARI!!! 🕹️👑
And let me tell you something, honey, if you didn’t grow up playing Atari, you missed out on one of the greatest technological achievements of our childhood!
I’m talking about Pac-Man, Ms. Pac-Man, Frogger, Asteroids, and Donkey Kong!
Those were the REAL video games! No fancy graphics, no realistic explosions, no characters that looked like actual human beings, and certainly no need for a $2,000 gaming system!
We had a joystick, ONE BUTTON, a television, and the determination of an Olympic athlete trying to win a gold medal! 🥇😂
And don’t even get me started on the COMPETITION!
We would sit in front of that television for HOURS trying to beat each other’s scores. And when I say hours, I mean HOURS!
We weren’t just playing video games. We were training for the Atari Olympics, and nobody had bothered to tell us there weren’t any medals!
PAC-MAN! 🟡
Bless his little yellow heart! That poor thing spent his entire existence running around a maze eating dots while being chased by ghosts!
And somehow, that was the most exciting thing we’d ever witnessed!
I mean, think about it. A yellow circle with a mouth eating dots!
THAT WAS ENTERTAINMENT, PEOPLE!
And Ms. Pac-Man? Well, she was basically Pac-Man with a bow and a little more attitude!
My kind of girl! 💋😂
FROGGER! 🐸🚗
Now, this one was basically teaching children how NOT to cross the highway!
You had one little frog trying to make it across a road full of speeding cars, then across a river filled with logs and other obstacles.
One wrong move and…
SPLAT!
Frog legs for dinner!
And there we’d sit, screaming at the television like the frog could actually hear us!
“JUMP! JUMP! NOOOOO! NOT THAT WAY!”
Heavens to Betsy Ross! That frog had more near-death experiences than I have had falling off ladders! 😂
ASTEROIDS! 🚀☄️
Now, here’s where we became certified NASA astronauts!
Flying around outer space shooting giant floating rocks before they destroyed our tiny little spaceship.
No astronaut training required!
Just a joystick and the reflexes of a caffeinated squirrel!
NASA really missed out on some talented recruits back in the 80s!
DONKEY KONG! 🦍🍌
And then there was that oversized gorilla throwing barrels at us while we tried to climb ladders and rescue the girl!
I’m sorry, but why was this gorilla so angry?!
Did somebody steal his bananas? Was he having relationship problems? Did he need therapy?!
Whatever his issue was, he needed to calm himself down because I was just trying to get up those ladders without getting knocked into next Tuesday!
And let me tell you, that gorilla and I had some SERIOUS disagreements! 😂
BUT HERE’S THE BEST PART… WE FLIPPED THE GAMES! 🏆
Now, for those of you who weren’t fortunate enough to experience the Atari generation, let me explain something.
We would play these games for SO LONG and rack up SO MANY POINTS that the score counter would roll over and start again!
We called that FLIPPING THE GAME!
That’s right!
We were so good that the game practically said, “I GIVE UP! JUST START OVER!”
Can you imagine?!
We weren’t just beating the game. We were confusing the poor machine!
There we’d sit, bragging about who flipped Pac-Man or who had the highest score like we’d just won the Super Bowl!
No trophies. No cash prizes. No sponsorships.
Just BRAGGING RIGHTS!
And those bragging rights were worth more than gold in the neighborhood! 😂
AND THEN… WE WENT OUTSIDE! 🚲☀️
Now, here’s something today’s younger generation might find absolutely SHOCKING!
We actually PUT DOWN THE JOYSTICK AND WENT OUTSIDE!
I KNOW! CAN YOU BELIEVE IT?!
We’d ride our bicycles all over the neighborhood, play outside with our friends, get hot, sweaty, dirty, and probably come home with a scraped knee or two.
Nobody was tracking us with a phone!
Nobody was texting us every five minutes!
Nobody was asking for our location!
Our parents just knew we’d eventually come home when we got hungry, thirsty, or the streetlights came on!
And after all that outdoor excitement?
BACK TO THE ATARI!
We’d grab something to eat, plop ourselves right back down in front of that television, and resume our very important mission of saving a frog, escaping ghosts, destroying asteroids, or fighting an emotionally unstable gorilla!
We had a SCHEDULE, people!
Morning: Atari.
Afternoon: Bicycle Olympics.
Evening: Atari World Championships.
And somewhere in between, we probably ate a sandwich and drank Kool-Aid! 😂
THOSE WERE THE DAYS! ❤️
There was no internet to crash, no software updates, no passwords to remember, no subscriptions, and no downloading games that took longer than actually playing them!
If the Atari wasn’t working, we’d check the connections, wiggle the cartridge, or give it a little encouragement!
And if that didn’t work, well, we’d try again until it did!
We didn’t need fancy graphics or virtual reality to have fun.
We had imagination, competition, neighborhood friends, bicycles, and a joystick that could make us feel like we ruled the entire universe!
And the best part?
We were making memories without even realizing it.
Those were some of the happiest, simplest, most carefree days of childhood.
No social media. No smartphones. No TikTok challenges.
Just kids being kids!
And I wouldn’t trade those memories for every gaming system on the planet!
So, to all my fellow 1980s Atari champions…
WHERE ARE MY PAC-MAN PROFESSIONALS, FROGGER SURVIVORS, ASTEROID ASTRONAUTS, AND DONKEY KONG WARRIORS?! 🕹️😂
Did YOU ever flip a game?
Because if you did, congratulations! You’re officially a retired professional Atari athlete!
And if anybody needs me, I’ll be over here looking for my joystick, trying to remember how I managed to cross that highway with a frog but can’t remember why I walked into the kitchen five minutes ago!
GOOD GRIEF, CHARLIE BROWN! 😂
We’ve gone from flipping Atari games to flipping through our reading glasses trying to find the ones already sitting on top of our heads!
GAME OVER? NOT YET, HONEY! I’VE STILL GOT A FEW LIVES LEFT! 🕹️👑😂
Carpe Diem! And long live the 80s! ❤️
