What’s one habit that has improved your life the most?

The Habit That Improved My Life the Most? Making My Bed… and Accidentally Becoming My Parents’ Parent

People always say, “Start your day by making your bed.”

Well…I do.

Every. Single. Morning.

The second I get out of bed, those blankets are getting straightened, pillows are fluffed, and that comforter is pulled tighter than my Spanx after Thanksgiving dinner.

I don’t know why, but if my bed is made, I feel like all is right in the world.

Or at least in my little corner of it.

Now…the world itself may still be a dumpster fire, but my bed? Magazine worthy.

Here’s the funny part…

My house sold, so now I’m living back at The Rents (aka my parents’ house…the same house where I grew up).

Talk about a full-circle moment.

I swear I walked in and instantly felt like I was sixteen again…

…except now I’m somehow the parent.

How did this happen?!

I’m walking through the house yelling,

“Bring me your dirty clothes!”

“Who left this cup sitting here?”

“Why are there twelve pairs of reading glasses scattered throughout the house?”

“Who keeps buying bananas and then forgetting they’re in the fruit bowl?”

Somewhere along the way, my parents quietly promoted me to Head of Household Operations without asking for my permission.

I’m the maid.

I’m the grocery shopper.

I’m the errand runner.

I’m the “Can you pick this up while you’re out?”

I’m the “Since you’re going anyway…”

I’m basically the unpaid intern with unlimited responsibilities.

The minute I take my clothes off, they go straight into the washing machine.

No piles.

No laundry mountain.

No “I’ll get to it later.”

Later is a dangerous word.

Later becomes next week.

Next week becomes “Where did this shirt even come from?”

Yes…I’m a little OCD.

Actually…

Let’s be honest.

I’m aggressively organized.

I like things clean.

I like things in their place.

I like opening a cabinet and not playing Jenga with Tupperware.

Living with The Rents has definitely tested my patience…

…and their ability to tolerate my constant cleaning.

But honestly?

It’s kind of been a blessing.

I’m back on the river where I grew up.

I sit out on the pier, and friends I’ve known since childhood pull up by boat just like they used to.

We laugh about old stories.

We remember growing up on the river.

It feels like someone hit the rewind button on life.

Sometimes it’s exactly what my heart needed.

And every now and then…

An old flame might just idle up to the dock.

Funny how life has a way of bringing people back around after forty years.

Now…

Am I going to tell you that story today?

Absolutely not.

Where’s the fun in giving away the ending?

Let’s just say…

Some stories deserve their own chapter.

Stay tuned…because that one might involve a boat, a pier, a few memories…and maybe a little bit of unfinished business. 🔥🩵
