Who Do I Spend the Most Time With?

If you asked me who I spend the most time with, the answer has always been pretty simple: The Rents.

That’s what I call my parents. And now that I’ve sold my house and moved back in with them, I really spend the most time with them.

Well…mostly my mom.

You see, my dad has strategically relocated himself to the basement, otherwise known as “The Man Cave.” Mom occupies the main floor, and I’m on the top floor. We basically live in a three-story family duplex.

Dad says the reason their marriage has lasted this long is because he stays in the basement.

Honestly, I get it.

My role in this household is less daughter and more referee. I spend a lot of time making sure they don’t kill each other. It’s pretty much the same job I have when we travel together. On trips, I sit between them like a small child riding in the back seat, telling them both to “hug it out.”

Some days I feel less like their daughter and more like the adult in the family. My brother and sister have already made it clear that when the time comes, I’m the one getting custody of Mom because apparently I’m the only one who can put up with her.

Dad reminds me of this frequently.

In fact, he tells me all the time, “If I go before your mother, you better be prepared.”

Trust me, I know.

I’ll be the one taking her to the casino, going on cruises, and sitting beside her at the slot machines while she pushes buttons and spends my inheritance.

But that’s okay.

We’ve got casino status levels to maintain for future cruises.

Cruising and traveling are basically our lifestyle at this point. A lot of my entertainment comes from planning trips, taking trips, talking about trips, and then planning the next trip while we’re still on the current trip.

The rest of my entertainment comes from Google recipes that eventually turn into blog posts.

Of course, it’s not just Mom I spend my days with.

There’s Sadie, her dog, who runs the household.

Then there’s Leo, her giant cat, who believes he’s the king of the castle.

And finally, my cat Blaze.

Blaze is my kitchen supervisor, recipe inspector, sous chef, and personal audience member. Every time I’m cooking, he’s right there watching my every move. If I’m singing at the top of my lungs while making dinner, he’s there for that too.

He never complains about my singing, which automatically makes him my favorite listener.

So who do I spend the most time with?

Definitely Mom.

Followed closely by Dad, who emerges from the basement occasionally for food and social interaction.

Then the pets.

It’s a loud, funny, slightly dysfunctional arrangement, but honestly, I wouldn’t trade it for anything.

Well…except maybe a free cruise.🚢 🐈‍⬛🐈🐕🐾🧍🏻‍♀️🧍
