So… What Was Going On the Year I Was Born? (1971, in case you’re wondering.)

Turns out, 1971 was kind of a big deal. While I was busy arriving on the scene, the rest of the world was clearly not resting.

For starters, entire countries were being formed. Bangladesh gained independence after a brutal liberation war, officially becoming its own nation. No pressure or anything—I just casually showed up during a year when history was being rewritten.

Meanwhile, technology was taking its first giant baby steps. Intel released the very first commercial microprocessor (yes, the ancestor of every computer, phone, and smart device we’re glued to today), and the world sent its very first email. Basically, 1971 said, “Let’s invent the future.”

Space wasn’t being ignored either. Mariner 9 became the first spacecraft to orbit Mars, proving that humans weren’t content with just Earth—we wanted to check out the neighbors too.

Entertainment? Oh, we had that covered. Walt Disney World opened in Florida, creating the happiest place on Earth (and a lifetime addiction to fireworks and overpriced snacks), and Led Zeppelin dropped their legendary fourth album. So yes, the soundtrack to my birth year was already iconic.

Politically, China took its seat on the United Nations Security Council, reshaping global diplomacy—again, all while I was learning how to exist.

And then… there was November 1971.

This is when things got weird.

An unidentified man calling himself D.B. Cooper hijacked a plane, demanded $200,000 in ransom, parachuted out over Washington State, and was never seen again. Gone. Vanished. Into thin air. To this day, no one knows who he really was or what happened to him. Honestly, if you’re going to disappear, that’s a pretty legendary way to do it.

The whole thing became such a pop-culture phenomenon that it even inspired a comedy movie years later (Without a Paddle), which—while not historically accurate—is absolutely hilarious and worth watching if you need a good laugh.

So yes, I was born in a year that gave us new nations, new technology, trips to Mars, Disney magic, classic rock, and one of the greatest unsolved mysteries of all time.

Not a bad year to make an entrance. 😉
