Why Running Outside Is My Favorite Way to Move, Think, and Breathe

My favorite way to exercise is simple: running outside on the open road. There’s just something about stepping out my front door, hitting the pavement, and letting my thoughts unwind that makes running more than just a workout for me — it’s my therapy, my quiet time, and my reset.

When I run, I feel productive in a way nothing else can replicate. I feel the work happening in my body, and I see the results. But just as important is what happens in my mind. Running gives me the space to think — sometimes clearly, sometimes in a jumble — but always in a way that helps me process whatever’s on my heart.

I usually run with music in my ears, but the real soundtrack is the outdoors around my home. I’m lucky to live near the water and among tall trees, where wildlife is part of the scenery. I see deer, owls, hawks… and yes, even the dreaded “no shoulders” 🐍 — which is exactly why I prefer the road over any wooded trails unless the weather is cold enough to keep them away!

There’s a freedom that comes with running alone. No schedules. No noise. Just me, my thoughts, and the world around me. And when that runner’s high kicks in? It’s pure magic. Suddenly I feel like I could go on forever.

But the best part might be the feeling I have when I finish — that mix of accomplishment, clarity, and calm that carries me through the rest of my day. Running outside isn’t just my favorite activity; it’s where I find myself again and again.🏃🏻‍♀️
