What major historical events do you remember?
✨A Major Historical Event I Will Never Forget – 9/11✨
A major historical event that I will never forget is September 11, 2001. I was at home with my three-year-old, and the television was on when my best friend, who lived next door, called me in hysterics. Her family lived in New York—her brother worked at the New York Stock Exchange, and his wife worked in one of the Twin Towers, along with many of their friends. She couldn’t reach them because of all the chaos and confusion that was unfolding.
As I watched the news coverage, my heart broke for our country. The images of devastation, fear, and heartbreak were overwhelming. Families were desperately searching for loved ones, unsure if they were safe or lost among the thousands who perished that day.
I couldn’t help but think back to a trip we had taken to New York less than a year before. We had cut through one of the Twin Towers as a shortcut—never realizing that, had it been that tragic day, no one would have even known we were there. That thought still gives me chills. Later, I found photos from that trip, standing on the Empire State Building with the Twin Towers behind us. The memories came flooding back, along with the grief of that day.
Thankfully, my friend’s sister-in-law made it out. She was on the third floor when the attacks happened—one of the lucky ones. Many of her husband’s friends from the NYSE made it out too, covered in ash and debris, but some never did. I can only imagine that the memories and nightmares of that day still linger with them.
To all those who lived through that tragedy, who lost loved ones, and who helped others in the midst of unimaginable horror—you are heroes. 9/11 changed us all forever, reminding us of both the fragility of life and the strength of the human spirit.
